about ethiopia

Ethiopia is a land characterized by contrasting geographical features, rich history and culture.
The unique Ethiopian cuisine reflects these factors.

MapLocated in northeastern Africa, Ethiopia is a land of contrast with geographical features ranging from mountains and fertile highlands to dry, hot low lands. Its highest point is Mount Ras Dashan at 4,543 meters above sea level, while its lowest point is Danakil depression at 125 meters below sea level. The East African Rift valley splits the country. This region is where 3.8 million year old remains of a female ancestor of the human race named "Lucy" by scientists were found.

Ethiopia, like many other African countries, is a land of multiple ethnic groups, languages and religions. Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa with a population of 67 million. Ethiopians speak 83 different languages and 200 dialects, Amharic being the official language. Christianity and Islam are the predominant religions in Ethiopia, and Judaism and traditional beliefs are also practiced.

The different physical features of the land, resulting in temperature variations, allow Ethiopians to grow various types of plants, while the diversity of the people and the rich culture contribute to the uniqueness of Ethiopian cuisine. As the only African country that has never been colonized, ancient historical traditions have been preserved.
